Septic System Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s

  • Clean your septic system regularly. Tanks with filters should have maintenance performed every six months.
  • Inspect your aeration system every six months.
  • Be conservative with your water use.
  • Use enzymes in non-aerated systems to help keep the bacteria alive.
  • Use septic-safe toilet paper and laundry detergent.

Don’ts

  • Don’t put items such as cooking fats, oils, backwash, or anything that could potentially clog your system down the drain.
  • Don’t build anything within 10 feet of your septic system.
  • Beware of letting heavy vehicles drive over your system. It could affect soil compaction and reduce your system’s ability to process water.
  • Don’t flush trash, baby wipes, hygiene products, etc., down your septic system.
  • Please don’t use bleach in your system, as it kills bacteria.
